Starting from the Ground Up: Leadership Skills are Essential for a Construction Manager

A Construction Project Requires Leadership

The construction manager (CM) is responsible for overseeing every aspect of the commercial construction process, from planning and budgeting to coordinating with architects, engineers, and subcontractors. Therefore, by leading the way for others, a CM controls the outcome from the very beginning and remains its driving force until the very end.

For a construction manager, it starts at the very beginning of building project. This will help ensure that a construction project is completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. When things are running smoothly on a commercial build, or even when they seem to be getting off track, effective leadership skills are critical.

Without question, being a CM requires a diverse skills set, including exceptional planning skills and technical expertise. But success also depends on strong leadership skills to manage a diverse team, handle conflicts, and inspire others to perform at their best. From our experience here at Concore, we recognize that certain leadership skills stand out. These three leadership characteristics help to minimize or eliminate potential issues and keep a project running smoothly:

1. Effective communication: Communication is the cornerstone of any successful construction project. A CM must be able to clearly articulate the developer’s expectations, goals, and project requirements to the entire design and construction team. This involves listening actively, providing constructive feedback, and creating an open and collaborative work environment. Effective communications means preventing misunderstandings, resolving issues promptly, and keeping the project on track.

2. Problem-solving: Construction projects are inherently complex and unpredictable. Unforeseen challenges and obstacles always come up along the way. So, it is essential to possess strong problem-solving skills to identify causes, analyze options, and make informed decisions. A solution-oriented mindset is useful to overcome obstacles efficiently and keep the project moving forward.

3. Decision-making: Construction managers are constantly faced with numerous decisions that impact the project's outcome. From selecting subcontractors to approving change orders, every decision plays a crucial role in the project's success. Strong decision-making skills involve gathering relevant information, evaluating risks and benefits, and considering the long-term implications. By making well-informed decisions, you can mitigate risks, optimize resources, and ensure that the project moves forward as planned
